For all the unexcitement that has always surrounded the Ohio band, they have managed to create a huge buzz since their first album in 2001. Their fifth release, "High Violet", also justifies any euphoria: The National are outdoing themselves again. The exuberant gesture of the previous album "Boxer" (2007) also defines these eleven tracks, which however, on their own, have a more harmonious effect. The opening, subliminally simmering "Terrible Love" establishes the aesthetic stronghold of the record, which thrives on the interweaving of intelligently staged rhythms with strings, winds, piano and the typical, very immediate guitar sound. Arrangements and melodic arcs keep the tension high, and the effect of the strong tracks is mostly epic ("England"), anthemic ("Bloodbuzz Ohio") or thoughtful as in "I'm Afraid Of Everyone". Last but not least, it's again Matt Berninger's unmistakable, deep baritone that makes "High Violet" a great work by The National. The National's reviews thus retain their rough edges and underline their uniqueness. You should enjoy the band while they're still at home on relatively small stages. The National egy amerikai indie rock együttes, amely 1999-ben alakult az ohiói Cincinnatiben. A zenekar tagjai: Matt Berninger (ének), az ikertestvérek Aaron Dessner (gitár, basszusgitár, zongora) és Bryce Dessner (gitár), valamint a testvérek Scott Devendorf (basszusgitár, gitár) és Bryan Devendorf (dob).
